23rd Mar 2011

Sales of Android mobile phones increased by 1,508% to 7.9 million units in the last quarter of 2010, beating iPhone sales which only increased by 66%, figures have revealed.

The statistics, from IDC, also show that Microsoft’s Windows Phone7 platform increased its total sales by 18 per cent.

Overall, the mobile phone picture is of a huge surge in smartphone sales from the fourth quarter of 2009 to 2010, increasing by a total of 99.4%.

IDC predicted a “fierce” battle between Android and Apple’s iPhone to determine the market leader.

European Mobile Devices Research Manager, Francisco Jeronimo, said: “IDC estimates at that Android will grow at a 37 per cent compound annual growth rate between 2010 and 2015 in Western Europe, overtaking the overall market growth in the period and that of its direct competitor, the iOS from Apple.

“The Western European mobile phone market will be dominated by smartphones, and Android will be the king of the hill.”

Last month mobile phone companies gathered in Barcelona at the sixth Mobile World Congress to reveal the latest handsets and the discuss future of mobile phones.
