Google roll out mobile friendly update - Is your website ready?

22nd Apr 2015

Today Google are rolling out their mobile friendly update. The update will boost the ranking of mobile friendly pages (only on mobile devices). Google say “Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.”

Google’s update will affect searches on mobiles only not desktops, It’s also mentioned the affect only applies to pages not the whole website.

What does this mean to you?

Sites optimised for mobiles will have a better chance of out ranking sites that are not responsive.  A site is responsive for mobiles in part when they change the page layout to suit the space on a device. This means you won’t have to pinch and zoom to read the pages content.

To check if your site is mobile-friendly, you can examine individual pages with the Mobile-Friendly Test or check the status of your entire site through the Mobile Usability report in Webmaster Tools. If your site’s pages aren’t mobile-friendly, there may be a significant decrease in mobile traffic from Google Search. But have no fear, once your site becomes mobile-friendly, Google will automatically re-process (i.e., crawl and index) your pages.
