Wordpress Now Powers 25% of the Web

9th Nov 2015

Wordpress, the highly popular Content Management System (CMS), has now reached a milestone with the news that it now powers 1 in 4 of all websites, that’s not just websites that are powered by a CMS but 25% of the web.

The data for this news comes from W3Tech which measures both usage and market share. W3Tech were also said “WordPress is used by 58.7% of all the websites whose content management system we know. This is 25.0% of all websites.” While these numbers naturally fluctuate over the course of the month, the general trend for WordPress has been slow but steady growth".

To obtain this data W3Tech analysed the top 10 million of all websites using a 3 month average. This was a process that excluded subdomains. Their very specific methodology is used to provide accurate data by limiting the impact of domain spammers.

The founder of Automatic, who are behind WordPress.com, Matt Mullenweg declared “We should be comfortably past 25% by the end of the year. The big opportunity is still the 57% of websites that don’t use any identifiable CMS yet, and that’s where I think there is still a ton of growth for us (and I’m also rooting for all the other open source CMSes).”

A downside of such a prime position for Wordpress is the increased risk of security attacks. Many malicious hackers favour the CMS as  . The advice from Automatic is to upgrade to the most up to date version of Wordpress as soon as possible as when system vulnerabilities are identified new versions are released offering increased protection. The same advice applies to users of other CMSes were updates are available.
