Following a Yahoo attack, Sky Broadband and BT have exposed the account information of at least 500 million customers. As a result of the hack companies that make use of and rely on the Yahoo platform have also been affected, these include companies like Sky Broadband and BT.
The hack that occurred in 2014 has been undetected by Yahoo for 2 years who allegedly took a further month to confirm that the attack occurred and involves the theft of usernames, passwords, email address, telephone numbers and dates of birth.
BT who consider Yahoo to be a legacy service has confirmed that only a minority of customers will be affected. Offering more details on how BT are handling the situation a spokesperson for the company is saying: “BT is currently investigating the Yahoo data breach. As a precaution for the minority of our customers who use Yahoo mail, we are advising those who haven't changed their passwords post-December 2014 to change them.”
For Sky Broadband a much larger number of its customers use the yahoo email service. in response to customers concerned about the hack a Sky agent has said, "At Sky, we take the security of our customers’ data and information extremely seriously. You may have seen that overnight Yahoo! announced that a copy of certain user account information was stolen from its company’s network in late 2014. Yahoo is the provider of sky.com email accounts. If you are a sky.com email holder, in line with the advice provided by Yahoo!, we advise that you change your passwords online and follow good password management practices.”
Furthermore in reference to the amount of time that has passed since the hack sky added “It is also worth noting that Yahoo was hacked two years ago and if your information was leaked it is likely that it has already been used in which it case it is of the utmost importance that you change your password immediately.
