NetAware.org.uk is a free annual social media guide to fifty of the most popular sites, apps, and games currently on the market; based on reviews by both children and parents.
This information was produced as part of a landmark partnership between O2 and the children's charity NSPCC to offer practical advice and support to parents.
Nina Bibby, Marketing and Consumer Director at O2, said “As a parent it can be difficult to keep up with the many different websites, apps and games our tech-savvy children know so well. It’s vital that parents actively participate in their children’s digital life to help them stay safe online."
This follows the findings of an NSPCC study show that 78% of children surveyed have accessed social media sites before reaching the minimum age of 13 and 50% of children reported seeing inappropriate content while using popular sites.
Other aspects of the partnership included a free dedicated helpline (0808 800 5002) offering advice on having a conversation with children about online safety and face to face safety and technical advice offered in O2 stores.
Net Aware has highlighted the scale with which children and young people are being exposed to inappropriate content on online. Thankfully some websites featured in Net Aware have made improvements to their privacy and reporting functions.
