A fake clay finger was shown to fool a smartphone's fingerprint sensor during a demonstration by a sensor manufacturer at the World Congress tech show.

In an interview with Vkansee company president, a manufacturer of high-resolution fingerprint readers, told the BBC that lower resolution sensors could be fooled by a finger made of modelling clay as high-resolution sensors can pick up micro features of a fingerprint and these are very difficult to reproduce.

This method of accessing a mobile phone would become more attractive to criminals as the popularity of making payment with a mobile increase.

When questioned if the high realisation scanners would lead to criminals just creating more detailed copies of a fingerprint Vkansee company president compared the process to the arms race saying that as you make a better arm someone comes along and makes a better defence.
