O2 Abstract

For years, the mobile phone industry has been trying to find a way to produce SIM cards for multiple carriers in one device. An eSIM is not a card you can physically remove and replace with another carrier's SIM card. It's an embedded chip that stores all of your carrier profiles. You only need one eSIM chip per device, so you'll never have to worry about carrying multiple SIM cards again!

In that case, O2 eSIM may be the right solution for your needs. How do eSims work

An eSIM is a small chip inside your phone that acts just like a SIM card. It’s not a physical SIM card, so you don’t have to worry about inserting it into your phone or swapping it with other SIMs. To get your eSIM up and running, you simply contact a network that supports eSIMs, and they’ll activate it for you. You can have plans from more than one network stored on your eSIM, but you’ll only be able to use one at a time. The main advantage of an eSIM is that it’s much more convenient than a physical SIM card. You don’t have to worry about losing your SIM card or having it stolen, and you can easily switch between different networks without having to go through the hassle of swapping SIM cards. In addition, eSIMs are less likely to be damaged by water or dust, which means they should last longer than physical SIM cards. However, the main downside of an eSIM is that not all networks support them yet. So if you want to use an eSIM, you’ll need to make sure that the network you’re using supports it. Nonetheless, as more

Many networks currently don't offer eSIMs, even though market leaders such as the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel phones are eSIM compatible devices.

Thankfully, O2 provides eSIMs for those with or wanting eSIM-compatible phones. O2 eSIMs are compatible with the iPhone XS, XR, XS Max, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3 XL.

What's happening?

On 19th September 2019, O2 introduced eSIM packs to allow customers and others with eSIM-capable devices to use eSIMs. Since Apple added eSIM capability to the 2018 iPhones, people have been eager to get their hands on an eSIM for their eSIM-compatible devices.

However, O2 understands that eSIMs aren't for everyone. Most customers will be happier using the standard SIM cards they're familiar with, so they will continue to offer regular plastic SIM cards. Still, if a customer asks for an eSIM pack, they will provide it.

What is an e SIM?

An eSIM is a programmable chip soldered to a circuit board during the manufacturing process. An eSIM chip can store multiple eSIM profiles.

When an eSIM profile has been loaded onto the eSIM chip, it provides the same functionality as a plastic SIM card.

What's a dual-SIM device?

A dual-SIM device is simply a device that can take two SIMs rather than the usual one. In a dual-SIM device, the SIMs could both be plastic, or one could be plastic and the second an eSIM. Dual-SIM devices have been available for some time. Devices like the iPhones XS Max have two SIM slots and can take two plastic SIM cards.

More recently, dual-SIM devices have become available with the option for both plastic SIM and an embedded eSIM.

Do you need a dual-SIM phone for your business?

A dual-SIM device is a perfect solution for businesses. With two SIMs, you can have one line dedicated to work and one for personal use. You won't have to worry about accidentally making calls on your company's dime or forgetting which number goes with which account. Plus, it's easy to switch between local numbers without changing plans or buying new phones if you travel internationally!

Dual-SIM devices are great because they give you more control over how your phone works and what it does. They also make life easier by giving people the option of using two different numbers at once. So whether you're juggling family and work responsibilities or just want some privacy from time to time, this is an excellent way of managing your day-to-day life!

Will O2 swap my sim card and let me keep my number?

Yes with if your phone has an O2 sim card and you have a compatible device you can swap you sim and expect least possible disruption when porting over a new number. With o2, sims can be swapped with minimal fuss.

How do eSIM devices operate?

There are two ways in which eSIM devices operate:

Dual-SIM-Dual Standby mode (DS-DS):

  • Most Dual-SIM devices operate in a Dual-SIM-Dual-Standby mode (DS-DS), where both the plastic SIM and the eSIM can make or receive calls. When someone calls either number, the phone will ring.
  • In DS-DS mode, when one SIM is active, such as making or taking a call, the other is not. Calls to the dormant SIM will go to voicemail until the other SIM is not being used.
  • The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR operate in a Dual SIM-Dual Standby (DS-DS) mode.

Dual SIM-Single-Active mode (DS-SA):

  • Some Dual-SIM devices operate in a Dual-SIM-Single Active mode (DS-SA) where you MUST manually choose to use either the plastic SIM or the eSIM. This means only one SIM (mobile number) will be active within the device at any one time.
  • If someone calls the number linked to the active SIM, the phone will ring. Suppose the number associated with the inactive SIM is called. In that case, it will go to voicemail as the SIM is not active, the equivalent of the phone being switched off.
  • The Pixel 3 and 3XL operate in a Dual SIM-Single Active (DS-SA) mode.

What's in an eSIM pack?

  • A unique QR code.
  • A unique manual activation code can be used if the QR code can't be scanned.
  • A unique SIM Serial Number (SSN).
