Public wi-fi can be useful for flexible working and remote companies but can also be dangerous when networks aren’t properly secured. Nowadays, most public places offer free wi-fi, some safer than others. However, unless you’re a wi-fi expert and can work out a secure network from a public one, you need to protect your device before you connect.
It’s important to remember that when you use public wi-fi networks, you will be sharing the network with a range of other people whom you may not know.
Cybercriminals can use public wi-fi to their advantage, using technology that allows visibility of computer communications within a specific range. Would you want a stranger to be able to see what you are doing on your device and the data you share with websites?
Here are some precautions you can take to help protect your devices while connecting to public wi-fi networks:
- Look for website URLs that include HTTPS at the beginning of the URL. The “S” at the end means “secure.” These websites are encrypted, helping to protect any information you input or share while on the page.
- If your organisation offers a Virtual Private Network (VPN), use it! VPNs encrypt all your wireless communications on the device you’re using. Even if you access a website without HTTPS, your VPN will secure your communications.
- Use 3G and 4G network access instead of wi-fi to avoid public view and data visibility.
